In 1965 Hubert Horatio Humphrey -- Vice President of the United States -- was
made an Honorary Life Member of Alpha Phi Alpha, the first intercollegiate
Greek-letter fraternity established for African American males.
He was awarded posthumously the Congressional Gold Medal of Honor on June 13,
1979 and the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1980.
